Private chef or traditional caterer: what is the difference?

Hiring a private chef means choosing an approach that is different from a traditional caterer. The two services look similar on the surface, but the customer experience has nothing to do with each other.

The classic caterer

  • Prepares the dishes in his laboratory beforehand
  • Delivers ready-to-serve dishes (sometimes the day before)
  • Dishes usually reheated or eaten cold
  • Standardized menu (often derived from a menu)
  • Can accommodate large groups (50–300+ guests)
  • Less customization

Personal chef / catering at home (our formula)

  • A fully equipped kitchen installed in your home, the same day
  • Fresh groceries bought in the morning at markets and from producers
  • Hot dishes, served plated or buffet-style according to your choice
  • Custom 100% menu designed in collaboration with you from the outset
  • Sized to accommodate 2 to 80 guests, depending on the chef and the event
  • Restaurant-worthy culinary experience

Specifically, the in-home catering service we offer is aimed at those who want the culinary quality of a serious restaurant plus the intimacy of a meal at home, without the constraints of a traditional caterer (delivery, reheating, fixed menu).

The in-home catering formats that we offer

Depending on your event, your catering chef can adapt to different formats:

  • Plated meal service: gourmet style, carefully plated, served at the table by the chef or an additional waiter. Ideal for 6 to 30 guests.
  • Catered buffet: generous presentation, friendly atmosphere, supervised self-service. Suitable for 20 to 80 guests.
  • Cocktail reception: elegant appetizers, petit fours, and stylish presentation. Standing reception, ideal for 20 to 100 guests.
  • Gourmet platter: simplified version for a professional meal or short reception (business lunch, executive committee).
  • Catered brunch: complete morning format, sweet and savory mix, ideal for the weekend.
  • Meals served in multiple courses: a multi-course gourmet meal (appetizers, starter, main course, cheese, dessert).

Authentic, personalized cuisine

Tailor-made menus

At MyTable, every in-home catering service is designed around your tastes and your occasion:
Dinner for two: fine cuisine, delicate food and wine pairings, table service.

  • Family reunion: generous dishes, warm and friendly atmosphere.
  • Evenings with friends: sharing formulas, appetizers, tapas and culinary discoveries.
  • Professional event: refined buffet, smooth service, meticulous presentation.

Our catering chefs will tailor their proposals to your expectations, whether it's a gourmet meal at home or an elegant buffet for dozens of guests.

Local, seasonal produce

The quality of a home catering service begins with sourcing. Unlike traditional caterers who buy in bulk several days in advance, our chefs do their shopping the very morning of your event: local markets, produce stands, artisan butcher shops, fishmongers, and cheese and wine producers.
This freshness, impossible to reproduce in traditional catering logistics, is one of the strong selling points of the private chef formula.

A transparent and turnkey service

Each Guide MyTable home catering service includes:

  • Designing a Custom Menu During a Discussion with the Chef
  • Shopping
  • On-site preparation and dressing
  • Table service or buffet service, depending on your event format
  • Tidying Up and Final Cleaning of Your Kitchen

Indicative pricing:

Family / friends meal: €80-110/person
Gastronomic menu with food and wine pairings: €110-160/person
Cocktail reception / buffet for large groups: 60–110 € per person
Gourmet platter for business meals: 50–90 € per person

No nasty surprises: transparency, quality and pleasure are our watchwords.

What is the real difference between a personal chef and a caterer?

The traditional caterer prepares dishes in their commercial kitchen, delivers them ready to serve, and the meal is often reheated on site. The personal chef (our formula) comes and cooks everything right in your home, using ingredients bought that very morning. The result: dishes served straight from the stove, restaurant-quality food, and a more personal experience.

For how many people can you hire an in-home caterer?

From 2 to 80 people as standard. For an intimate dinner, a single chef is enough. Beyond 20-25 guests, the chef can work with an assistant or a waiter. For very large events (80+), plan a prior discussion to validate logistics: kitchen size, brigade, timing.

How much does a personal caterer cost?

The price ranges between €60 and €160 per person depending on the format (cocktail party, buffet, served meal), the level of service (family-style, gourmet) and the number of guests. For a buffet of 30 people: ~€70-90/person. For a gourmet menu with wine pairing: €110-160/person. Request a personalized quote based on your project.

Does the chef bring their own equipment and tableware?

The chef brings their own knives, specific utensils, and small equipment. The equipped kitchen (oven, stovetop) and serving dishes remain your responsibility. For large events or if you would like a complete setup (tableware rental, tablecloths, furniture), our chefs can organize this through their partners for an additional fee.

How far in advance should you book an in-home caterer?

For a weekday dinner: 2 to 3 weeks. For a weekend: 4 to 6 weeks. For an important event (wedding, large reception): 2 to 3 months. For the year-end holidays and New Year's Eve: 2 to 3 months minimum.

Does the service include drinks?

By default, the chef focuses on the culinary presentation (cooking, plating, service). Drinks (wines, champagnes, spirits) remain your responsibility. However, you can ask the chef to manage wine sourcing or food and wine pairings for an additional fee. Some chefs work with partner sommeliers.
